The VELscope is a specialized, non-invasive tool that aids our team in oral cancer screenings. The tool uses a special light that can measure the fluorescence of the soft tissues of the mouth and indicate abnormalities. It allows us to look below the topmost layer of tissue, which can often appear normal even when oral cancer is present. We use the VELscope in addition to a visual and manual examination of the tissues of the mouth, head, and neck in a typical oral cancer screening.
